It is impossible to beat the deal on this cordless drill, but be aware that this is Dewalt's entry level drill. It comes with their smaller batteries (1700mAh) compared to the larger capacity XRP batteries (2400mAh). So when people say that replacement batteries are $60 each they are referring to the larger XRP batteries. The batteries that this drill comes with are not even sold separately, or if they are not at any stores that I have seen. It also has a limited speed compared to their larger and heavier XRP drill which also has the hammerdrill capability for drilling into masonry and hard material.
It has treated me well for household jobs and carpentry jobs around the house, but it has its limits. Example: I wanted to get rid of a stump in the yard and the directions for the "stump out" required drilling 10" deep by 1/2" wide holes. The drill could not handle it. The motor started smoking. To be fair I knew this was asking a lot.
The reason I still give it 5 starts is that it finished the job with a lot of coaxing and still works despite melting something internally. Solid drill but if you want to do some heavy drilling then upgrade to the XRP model. - By Chris

I received this drill through Amazon as a wedding gift in August, 2012. The chuck broke (one of the vises in the chuck seized up) in October, 2013. When I dropped it off for repair at an authorized service center they told me DeWalt automatically considers the chuck a wear item and I had to pay for its repair. So I got stuck with a $55 repair bill on a $99 drill after 14 months of light use. This failure to cover the chuck isn't mentioned anywhere in the manual or the item description.
Since DeWalt doesn't honor their warranty, I won't be buying any more DeWalt, Black & Decker, or Porter Cable tools (all the same company). I am saddened by this since I've bought almost all DeWalt tools and have never had a problem with any others. I have many more tools to purchase and will have to go with a different brand. - By Stephen Manza

This drill packs more than enough punch for the serious DIYer (more than just a picture-hanger). Charges very quickly and maintains that charge for when you need it. I do agree with some of the other commenters about the torque settings. They're lighter than what I'd like to see, but this is not a deal-breaker. Would I buy this drill if I were a full-time contractor who had to bore large holes or drop long lag bolts all day every day? No, but there are higher end tools for that level of work, and you're going to pay more for them. I recently purchased a Kawasaki cordless from Costco for 44 bucks. My son admonished me for purchasing a cordless tool powered by a NiCad battery pack-old technology. It was promptly returned.
I searched for entry level Lithium Ion cordless drills and found the Black & Decker to be a highly reviewed drill at a reasonable price point of $64 (with free shipping on Amazon.) I recieved it yesterday and charged it up. It is well made, solid and fits in my hand perfectly and boy is it powerful! This unit is tough to find at brick and mortar stores and I found Amazon had the best price when I factored in the shipping. Considering the rubbish that one is likely to end up with when trying to buy cheap power tools, I'm actually happy with this drill. The case is flimsy, the chuck wobbles a bit, it only takes up to 3/8 bits, has no hi/low gearbox, and it only comes with one battery, but it spins a drill bit decently well. If you use a drill more than once a week or might use it for extended periods, just go buy the $99 Dewalt, otherwise, this one is probably fine if you're just looking for something that's just good enough. - By Nemo

I bought this drill when I purchased my own home. I needed a drill for home repairs and projects, and I was on a very tight budget. I spent many hours reading reviews for various drills, and eventually narrowed it down to this one. I liked that it came with everything I needed for a good price, and I felt somewhat safe after reading comments by others. I got the drill fast and immediately charged the battery. Then I put it to use. The first thing I used it on was to hang a shelf. I needed to drill holes in the wall studs first and then put the screws in. It did ok with that job,m and I was happy. The next day I went to hang a birdfeeder that my kid made. The drill bit I was using got stuck in the wood and pulled out of the drill. After about 20 minutes of trying, it finally came back out, a little bent. I tried again on another side and the same thing happened. I had the keyless chuck as tight as I could get it. I was very disappointed. I was also not impressed with the speed. Yes it has multiple speeds, but none are very fast or powerful. If all you're doing is using the drivers, it may be a decent drill, but for actual jobs, it doesn't seem like it will hold up. I returned this and I'll be going to Menards to buy a name brand drill that I can check out beforehand. - By Sam

I come from a Makita family and had always planned on getting a Makita tool set. While I was at Home Depot these power tools were on sale, and my wife surprised me with them. It has been over 2 years and I am so glad she did. I love (LOVE) my Dewalt power tool set. I use the drill most frequently (of course) but I can't even count how many times the grinder has been the perfect tool for whatever job I have been working on. I've been heavily using every tool at a multi-building renovation project, especially in places where using an extension cord wasn't feasible or there was no power.

Drill: The self-tightening chuck makes it my favorite drill ever. Click-click and it's ready. And a nice range of speeds and torque.

Circular saw: It's proven light enough to do vertical and horizontal plunge cuts that I couldn't do with my corded 10" saw.

Reciprocating saw: Cuts nails and wood like it should. And with a pruning blade I use it for quick spot-trimming jobs of dead tree branches and woody vines.

Impact driver: It drives 3 inch screws into aged oak beams really fast, whereas before I had to pre-drill a hole in order to use a regular driver on those.

Cut-off tool: Cuts nails well. Sands wood but of course not as fast as a corded grinder. The guard got in the way sometimes but it can be removed quickly if necessary.

Flexible flashlight: I thought this was a goofy add-on to a power tools set, but turns out it's useful when it gets dark while working in a room that doesn't have working lights yet (duh). Much brighter than a pocket flashlight.

Same comment as other reviewers- get an extra battery and/or multi-battery charger if you expect to be using multiple tools at the same time.

A side note, and not the item's fault: the bag can get really heavy and awkward, especially if extra batteries and different blades and discs etc. start sneaking into the internal and external pockets. Best to split things up a bit. - By BillP

Great little gadget but low on power. We had another electric screwdriver in the past that really outdid this one. But once you buy it and use it, you're stuck with it. You have to make sure the red light is lit or it won't charge. It doesn't sit really well on the charging things. Great for hanging pictures and light jobs.
